The AIMH (Artificial Intelligence for Media and Humanities) laboratory is dedicated to exploring and pushing the boundaries in the field of Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on its application in digital media and humanities. This lab's objective is to enhance the current state of AI technology particularly on deep learning, text analysis, computer vision, multimedia information retrieval, multimedia content analysis, recognition, and retrieval. InfraScience is a research group of the National Research Council of Italy - Institute of Information Science and Technologies (CNR - ISTI) based in Pisa, Italy. This report documents the research activity performed by this group in 2023 to highlight the major results. In particular, the InfraScience group engaged in research challenges characterising Data Infrastructures, e-Science, and Intelligent Systems. The group activity is pursued by closely connecting research and development and by promoting and supporting open science. In fact, the group is leading the development of two large scale infrastructures for Open Science, i.e. D4Science and OpenAIRE. During 2023 InfraScience members contributed to the publishing of several papers, to the research and development activities of several research projects (primarily funded by EU), to the organization of conferences and training events, to several working groups and task forces.Source: ISTI Annual Reports, 2023

The sustainable management of fisheries and conservation of marine living resources through the ecosystem approach is a societal issue of global dimension. More and more, data is needed to support evidence-based decision making and adaptive management, a challenge that no single institution or country can address in isolation. The European Union's programme for e-infrastructures and data infrastructures has been the pathway to integrating data services and tools in a seamless way, increasingly at large scale. As a data management infrastructure, iMarine (http://www.i-marine.eu) ensures that computational resources, specific tools, and data services are open to many different actors and complementary initiatives. Guidelines for the EUBrazilOpenBio project quality plan

The EUBrazilOpenBio Quality Plan will define the guidelines and procedures of the project in order to ensure efficient project execution as well as high quality project results. The purpose of the present Technical Report is to facilitate the co-operation within the EU-BR consortium providing its members with a point of reference and a common understanding of project methods and procedures, with particular emphasis on the fulfillment of the contractual obligations towards the European Commission and the CNPq. This report will guide all beneficiaries in order to reduce project overhead and increase the efficiency and quality of the work to be performed. The rules, templates, suggestions, and means of communication specified in this document aim to guide the EUBrazilOpenBio beneficiaries providing a framework for operation in different managerial aspects. D4Science - DIstributed colLaboratories Infrastructure on Grid ENabled Technology for Science

This project aims to continue the path that the GÉANT, EGEE, and DILIGENT projects have initiated towards establishing networking, grid-based, and data-centric e-Infrastructures that accelerate multidisciplinary research by eventually overcoming several crucial barriers that stand on the way, primarily those related to heterogeneity, sustainability and scalability. Such a scientific work needs to be supported by a wide range of heterogeneous and continuously evolving application resources, i.e., data and services, whose integration is very problematic as they are usually tailored to the specific requirements of the organisation that developed each one. Furthermore, the core functionality implemented by these applications (e.g., analysis, transformation, and extraction of knowledge from a large body of distributed and heterogeneous data) is computationally intensive and can rarely be sustained by individual organisations. Finally, setting up an appropriate collaboration framework is an expensive, time-consuming, and complex task that only few organisations can undertake.

DRIVER II - Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research – Phase II

DRIVER is a multi-phase effort whose vision and primary objective is to establish a cohesive, pan-European infrastructure of Digital Repositories, offering sophisticated functionally services to both researchers and the general public. Its aims to introduce key innovations compared to the original “DRIVER” project, while building on its results. The main novelties envisioned are: Establishment of a “European Confederation of Digital Repositories” as a strategic arm of DRIVER; Inclusion of Digital Repositories with non-textual or non-publication content, e.g., images, presentations, and possibly primary data; Construction of “enhanced publications”, which combine interrelated information objects into a logical whole, e.g., publications coupled with relevant presentations and associated datasets; Provision of advanced functionality to address the requirements raised by the above innovations or to serve varied modes of scientists’ research explorations. Additionally, DRIVER Phase-II moves from a test-bed to a production-quality infrastructure, expands the geographical coverage of Digital Repositories included in it, intensifies state-of-the-art and future-direction studies, and escalates dissemination, training, and community building activities. “DRIVER Phase-II” significantly broadens the horizons of the DRIVER endeavour regarding infrastructure operation, functionality innovation, and community relevance, and is a major step on the way to the envisioned Knowledge Society.

The initiative Bringing Europe’s electronic infrastructures to expanding frontiers II (BELIEF-II) is a twenty four month Coordination Action (CA) of the INFRA-2007-3.3: Studies, conferences and coordination actions supporting policy development, including international cooperation, for eInfrastructures. It builds on the success achieved in BELIEF [2005-2007] and has as its strategic objective to coordinate the efficient & effective communication, Results, Networking & Knowledge Flow between EU e-Infrastructures projects and their users, promoting their development and exploitation worldwide. Through adopting a structured coordination of all EU e-Infrastructures projects, dissemination and networking activities, BELIEF-II seeks to: 1. Ensure Europe’s numerous e-Infrastructures projects evolve in synergy with one another together with national initiatives to ensure common directions and efficient interaction. 2. Reinforce the relevance of Europe’s e-Infrastructures worldwide thus helping sustain their successful development and exploitation globally. 3. Provide a communication platform that is at the same time a channel for projects to manage their content, to communicate activities to users and the public, and to be a unique access point for users to find out about eInfrastructures.

DRIVER - Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research

The DRIVER Infrastructure is an implementation of D-NET (see) and hosts one main aggregation system, integrating Open Access metadata records from a growing number of European Institutional Repositories. At present, the infrastructure runs 36 services distributed over 9 partner sites; as a result of the Confederation efforts, the resulting Information Space numbers 1,000,000+ records out of 200+ repositories across 27 countries, and the number of repositories willing to join is still growing. Currently, the space is accessed by three DL applications: the Belgium national repository portal, offering search over the Belgium Repository Federation subset; Recolecta national repository portal, offering search on the Spanish Repository Federation subset; and the main DRIVER portal, providing access and advanced functionality over the whole space.

gCube is a Software System designed and implemented to enable the building and operation of a Service Oriented Infrastructure supporting the definition of Virtual Research Environments (VREs). Such system is capable to exploit and simplify the access to the largest Grid infrastructure currently existing, i.e. the one operated by the European Grid for E-sciencE project (EGEE). A Service Oriented Infrastructures is an infrastructure developed according to the Service Orientation principles, this reflects in facilities for the re-usability and dynamic allocation of the resources forming the infrastructure itself. A Virtual Research Environment is the materialization of a very flexible and agile application development model based on the notion of Software as a Service (SaaS) in which components may be bound instantly, just at the time they are needed and then the binding may be discarded. According to it, user communities are enabled to define their own applications by simply selecting the application constituents (the services, the collections, the machines) among the pool of resources made available through the infrastructure. The cost of operating each defined VRE is completely outsourced to the infrastructure that by applying economies of scale to the operation of the applications (sharing and re-use) can offer better, cheaper and more reliable applications than single communities can themselves.
